Preservation Through Education

The Reason

Through the years honey bees have been subjected to negative portrayals by Hollywood and the Media and their ecosystem has been bombarded with pesticides. The abundance of misinformation, over use of pesticides and lack of education has caused a detrimental impact on their existence. Realizing the need to change this the idea of The Bee and Me was born!

The honey bee is considered the most important animal on Earth and pollinates 1/3 of our food supply. By providing fact-based education we can positively affect not only the honey bee but virtually all life on Earth and make a better world for generations of children to come!

The plan

To change negative perception and help preserve their ecosystem, our plan at The Bee and Me, is to provide positive real-world knowledge and education!

  • During a field trip at our facility, everyone will not only learn how to live with Honey Bees in average everyday situations but also how to protect their delicate ecosystem and be provided a visual experience as well!

  • In a classroom environment they will learn about the honey bee, its ecosystem, its role in our lives and even get a chance to hold one too!

  • After class they will be excited when we take them out on the property where they can see honey bees in action as they pollinate our garden of bee friendly native flowers, fruits and vegetables.

  • Continuing on to the Sweet Room they will be intrigued as we show them how honey is removed from honeycomb and how beeswax is rendered as well!

  • Having worked up that appetite, we return to the main facility for lunch. During this time we take the opportunity to discuss what they have learned, what they have seen and the food on their plates that would not have been available if not for the work of the honey bee!

  • After lunch they are invited into the center hall where they can see exhibits, such as live observation hives, and are encouraged to engage in questions and answers with our knowledgeable staff, and even see someone wearing a real bee beard right up close and personal!

  • As their day of adventure and knowledge ends, they are given a take home gift bag filled with items such as literature on what they’ve learned, packages of bee friendly native flower seeds and of course honey!

Whether on the ride home or back to school, they will be leaving with a better understanding of the importance of honey bees, their ecosystem and the vital role they play in our everyday lives as well as virtually all life on Earth. Not only will they be able to pass that understanding and knowledge on to others, they will also remember this experience forever!
